Francisco, a sailor, anchored regularly in Bahia de Guanabara in the early 20th century. As an old hand, he knew the bay which was harboring Rio's traditional port, pretty well. Rio in the 1920's was a different story: Upper class dwellers were still promenading around the royal parks of Gloria, close to the Centro. Ipanema was yet a sleepy fishing village, isolated from Gloria and the Centro by Rio's iconic granite mountains. Corcovado, towering 700m above Rio like a needle in the sky and surrounded by virgin jungle, was still untouched.

In those days in the 20s, Rio was on of the world's busiest ports, as it was notorious among sailors for serious partying, drinking and whoring. Sailors did not even need to come ashore as business-minded ladies were prepared to ferry to the anchoring vessels. Francisco had just enjoyed another magic Rio party night, full of booze and physical activity. The ladies had already left, and while he was slowly getting sober, Jesus Christ appeared to him, without any advance notice, in the dark tropical skies like a divine epiphany. Francisco immediately swore to stop drinking and to become a better person.
