Almost too close, Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan, India, 2007
For three days we had been combing through the forests and jungles of Ranthambore, turning every leaf upside down. No tiger in sight. Every time we returned to camp staff treated us even nicer, as they were believing that they had to console us for being THE guests who had not yet seen a tiger. Again and again, we had circled around the patch of dense forest, hoping to get a glimpse of the tigress with two cubs which had regularly been seen here until three says ago, frolicking around the mysterious Maharadscha ruins of domes and palaces embedded in lush greenery. But had since disappeared. Then after five failed game drives, we ventured out into the jungle for the last time. Hope had left. It was late afternoon, we were heading through a small forest path towards a nice pond, to at least enjoy a last beautiful sunset. The remnants of the last light of the day were bathing the jungle still into warm light. And suddenly, out of the deepness of the forest, a Royal bengal tiger was slowly marching, as in slow motion, towards our direction. We stood in awe, and had, as the world's possibly most beautiful creature finally stopped its uphill stalk, maybe less than three meters between us and the tiger. He was as surprised as we were. And obviously a bit less happy...
