CHILOUT - the art of resting

Before 10.000 BC humans survived as hunters and collectors, hunting for just 4 hours a day. The rest, 20 hours, was spare time, time to rest. Today, only lions can still afford this fancy lifestyle. For humans, however, the Neolithic Revolution had been the expulsion from paradise. It brought the switch from a lifestyle of hunting and gathering to one of agriculture and settlement. Working hours became longer. Farming societies appeared, first in Mesopotamia. Settled communities permitted humans to experiment with plants, learning how they grew and developed. This new knowledge led to the domestication of plants into crops. One crop, hop, enabled the invention of beer. Humans still need to rest. They do wherever they can, all over the world.
