ANGOLA
Apart from Nigeria Angola is Africa’s biggest producer of oil. When I first visited in 2006 there was a huge construction boom in its capital Luanda with cranes shooting out of Angola’s red soil like mushrooms of a Baltic forest. Doing great business with their lusophone irmãos on the other side of the Atlantic, Brazilian companies earned a fortune. My unremarkable frozen Dr. Oetker pizza, I accidentally ordered in a restaurant recommends by colleagues, cost a fortune, too: 35 US dollars. Meanwhile, most Angolans still were bitterly poor. Oil revenue just went to the lucky few. Children play in sewage , pouring unfiltered into the sea. Just a few meters away a luxury yacht is setting sail. I hear the champagner korks popping.
