DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
I love the Caribbean, I love hopping from one small Caribbean nation to the next, preferably in a rusty ferry with a cool Red Stripe beer in my hands. For long I had skipped the Dominican Republic, the country where the Spanish had founded their first capital in the New World (Santo Domingo) and from where they had conquered Latin America. When I finally visited in 2015 I stood in line with more modern conquerors: package tourists and cruise ship travellers. To escape them I went to the beautiful and almost unspoiled Samana peninsula. Foodwise I found that the Name fûr Einwohner have a passion for chicken. Unfortunately these poor animals only have a choice between Pest and Cholera: They are either eaten as pollo or trained as contenders in raucous public cock fights. Either way – life is short.
