EL SALVADOR
My trips to El Salvador in 2007 and 2016 were each time an intimidating enterprise. The highest murder rate in the world, restaurants, crater lakes, surfing beaches and even miradores in the middle of nowhere were heavily guarded be terrifying, pumpgun-touting security guards Colonial villages that served as weekend destinations for a crime-plagued people felt like fortresses. In 2019, with the coming into power of President Bukele and the subsequent incarceration of thousands of Mara Salvatrucha gang members. everything changed. El Salvador became the safest country in Latin America. Western countries with their human rights agendas are wavering – does the end sometimes justify the means?
