INDONESIA
I went to Bali in 1997, long before the Post-Corona Home Office crowd discovered it as its favorite workstation. Bali and Java which I visited in 2008 have been avant-garde in inventing the boutique hotel and I cannot think of a better place to sample one than there. Way more important is another avantgarde: Indonesians were avant-gardists of decolonialisation. I just learned this by reading my favourite author David van Reybrouck’s Revolusi book. Raja Ampat, Togian, Niki Sumba, Gili Lara Dawat, Cempedak, Wayag – names which nobody knows and which are a fantastic for a months-long ferry-backpacking -bonanza through the Indonesian Archipelago.
