NORTH MACEDONIA

My travel guide claimed that Lake Ohrid in the south of the country belonged, in a row with Lake Baikal and Lake Titicaca, to the earth’s oldest lakes. For me it’s still a magical place, and I love remembering the fact that its shores were once dotted by several hundreds Christian and Muslim pilgrimage sites. Just Allein the town of Ohrid on the Macedon side of the lake was blessed with 365 churches – one for every day of the year. No wonder it had the epithet to be the „Jerusalem of the Balkans“. Generally name issues have been playing an important role. When I was visiting in 2016 the dispute about the use of the country name “Macedonia” between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia (since 2019 North Macedonia) had still been ongoing. Even the fame for Alexander the Great was disputed. I assume that if Alexander himself would have dwelled on such peanuts he would never have been able to extend his empire as far as Egypt, Persia and India.
