PHILIPPINES
I love travelling in South Eastl Asia. Thailand has great street food and Bangkok, Vietnam has the Mekong, Pho and amazing beaches around Nha Trang, Laos has Luang Prabang and gentle people, Indonesia Nihi Sumba and Sulawesi, Cambodia Angkor Wat, Kep and Crab. Among this star parade of great travel destinations in South East Asia I had for long and carelessly forgotten the Philippines – for no reason since the “Pearl of the Orient Sea” has everything: the most dramatic rice terraces of Banaue in the North, a capital with the biggest Chinatown outside China, great Filipino-Spanish food (think Tinapa, a smoked fish, or lechón, a suckling pig!), Chinese food (think Tim Ho Wan and Din Tai Fang!) as well as white-sand beaches and coral reefs around Palawan. Above all I love the funloving Filipinos, party people par excellence, Whenever I had a great night out in Singapore or Hongkong it had been thanks to the Latino-infused Filipino band. In Mexico-City my favorite and best- connected foodie is a Filipina, too: Nobody else can cook Asian food better and can recommend great food with more power: “kann man essen”.
